Choosing the right microplate washer: why Agilent BioTek is a smart investment for your lab

When it comes to lab automation, microplate washers might not be the most flashiest instruments, but they are absolutely essential. Whether you’re running ELISAs, cell-based assays or bead-based workflows, a reliable washer can make a huge difference in your results and your workflow.

At BioSPX, we help labs across the Benelux region find the right tools for their research. One of our top recommendations is the Agilent BioTek line of microplate washers, trusted by scientists worldwide for their performance, flexibility and ease of use.

Why microplate washers matter more than you think

Manual plate washing is time-consuming and prone to variability. A high-quality automated washer ensures:

  • Consistent, reproducible results
  • Reduced hands-on time
  • Minimised contamination risk
  • Improved assay sensitivity and accuracy

When you’re working with ELISA, cell cultures, or magnetic beads, having a reliable washer isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.

FAQ

Find some answers on the most frequently asked questions about microplate washers

Yes, the Agilent BioTek microplate washer and combination washer dispensers can wash plate geometries from 6 wells to 1536 wells, depending on the instrument and configuration.

Separate aspirate and dispense manifolds like those on the Agilent BioTek 405 washer and 406 FX washer dispenser enables you to independently set dispense height and aspirate height. This can be useful when the wash steps require the wells to be filled completely. The aspiration tubes can be positioned to aspirate at the top of the well to allow “overfill washing” without flooding the instrument. Also, assays like those that develop a cell monolayer can be washed leaving some residual so that cells are not stripped from the well bottom. Another advantage of separate manifolds is the ability to position the dispense tubes either in the center of the well for a vigorous wash, or to the well sides for a gentle wash.

Agilent BioTek microplate washers have a dual-action manifold that allow placement of the dispense and aspirate tubes independently. The dispense tubes are angled and can be positioned so that the fluid flows down the well sides, leaving the cell monolayer intact. Also, the dispense flow rate and aspiration rates are user-adjustable to optimize the system for cell washing.

Agilent BioTek washers can include automated buffer switching to easily switch between up to four buffer bottles (406 FX405 TS and 405 LS) or up to three buffers (50 TS).
