Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) is a fundamental technique in the development of novel (therapeutic) peptides, which can be used for a wide range of applications. At its core, peptide synthesis involves the coupling of amino acids, producing peptides or peptidomimetics which can mimic natural proteins or serve as novel therapeutic agents. Manual Fmoc-SPPS is a labour-intensive and repetitive process. For this reason, CEM (among others) has developed automated peptide synthesizers, which have been further refined over the past 20 years, significantly reducing reaction time and solvent consumption.
